Small Bites: Pho Eatery replacing Vegetable Garden in Rockville

Rockville Pike will get another soup shop when Pho Eatery arrives in the space that formerly housed the Vegetable Garden, the longtime Chinese vegetarian eatery that closed in July of 2012.

Pho Eatery co-owner Anthony Vu said the new restaurant will feature pho, plus rice and grilled meat dishes. Smoothies will also be served.

Vu’s partner in the project is Tim Do, who used to own Ba Le, the shuttered Vietnamese restaurant further up the Pike that was known for its banh mi sandwiches.

Pho Eatery will seat about 80 patrons and sport an industrial, contemporary look with cement floors, aluminum chairs and orange and green walls, said Vu, who is also the project coordinator at a design/build and management firm.

Look for a mid-September opening.

Brunch at Brickside

When football season kicks off in September, Brickside Food & Drink, the modern speakeasy/sports bar in Bethesda, will be serving brunch to go with it.

Lisa Marie Frantz was recently promoted to executive sous chef at Brickside, and brunch was the first big project she tackled.

“My forte is American from-scratch cooking,” says Frantz, who formerly worked for Founding Farmers and Farmers Fishers Bakers in the District. “It’s taking the classics, the nostalgic items, and bringing them back to life.”

For brunch, that means homemade artichoke-garlic chicken sausage and from-scratch English muffins and organic whole wheat bread. Frantz said she will also be doing a Breakfast Flatbread, cooked in a pizza oven, with thinly sliced potatoes, fontina cheese, tomatoes and sunny-side up eggs.

French toast stuffed with vanilla-sweetened cream cheese, buttermilk waffles and lemon-ricotta pancakes will come with a choice of Nutella fudge sauce or mixed berry syrup reduced with Grand Marnier.

The brunch will be launched on August 24, and be served Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Ropa Vieja for a cause

Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar makes it debut at Rockville’s North Bethesda Market on August 15 at 6 p.m. with a benefit dinner, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Manna Food Center, the county’s main food bank.
