The Literacy Council of Montgomery County celebrated its 50th anniversary with a celebration on Sunday, June 2, 2013 from 2 pm to 4 pm at VisArts at Rockville Town Square.

Congressman Chris Van Hollen delivered the keynote address, and the program was moderated by Kavitha Cardoza, WAMU education reporter. Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett and County Councilmember Roger Berliner presented a joint proclamation to the Literacy Council.

The anniversary celebration commemorated the contributions and accomplishments of current and former LCMC adult learners, volunteers, tutors, and staff.  The program included remarks by representatives of these groups.

In 50 years of service to Montgomery County, the Literacy Council has provided basic literacy and ESL services to over 15,000 adult learners from 93 countries, including the United States, and has trained nearly 8,700 volunteer tutors. The Literacy Council’s programs currently serve approximately 1,500 adults each year.
