Commuting Nightmare

Last night almost certainly will go down as one of the worst commutes ever in our area. We'd love to hear about your experiences.

I was shoveling around midnight last night when our neighbor pulled into his driveway. He told me that it had taken him more than eight hours to drive from downtown D.C. to Chevy Chase! When his wife came out to greet him, she said it had taken her nearly three hours to drive the three miles from her office in Bethesda.

I can safely say that last nights commute home was the worst one, by far, in the 25 years that I have lived in Maryland.

It took me over 3 hours to just get to the Beltway from Montgomery Lane in Bethesda, River Road was a parking lot. Then, 270 was also a parking lot (I thought that would be better plowed than my usual River Road all the way up north, better to sit in traffic than get stuck!), so another hour or 2 and I finally bailed on Montrose.

The roads were bad, but at least I was moving. All was well until I got to Darnestown, hit a slick spot going 20 miles an hour and slide off the road into a snow bank. For the first time ever, I used the snow shovel that I paranoidly stick in my car when they call for snow, just in case. I tried to dig my car out, while I watched several other cars skid and almost hit my car in the same place. Somehow, I managed to get my car out of the snow pile and continue on home.

In the wooded area on 107 before you get to Poolesville, just 2 car lengths in front of me (I was the only car on the road at this point) a huge tree branch the size of a whole tree fell across the road. The fact that it could have killed me did not escape my mind, and I was shaking.

Luckily, a few cars came up to the scene, and a bunch of men got out and it took 4 or 5 men to move the tree so cars could pass.
It took 6 hours total to get home! Right about the time that the tree fell, the power went out at my house. I didn't care. I had made it home.
