

Craving General Tsao’s Chicken—without the chicken? The Vegetable Garden has it, along with vegetarian versions of other Chinese classics. “It’s such a great place to introduce people to vegetarian cuisine,” says Erica Meier of Takoma Park, a frequent customer and executive director of Compassion Over Killing, an animal rights organization that named this the Best Vegetarian Restaurant in Maryland.
Owner Jack Sun, 79, opened the place in 1989 after customers at his conventional restaurant, Chinese Gourmet (now closed), requested more vegetarian options. “I think it’s healthier,” he says simply.
