With some 30 varieties of bread—from honey whole wheat to pesto asiago—Spring Mill’s cozy Bethesda shop is as close to Grandma’s kitchen as you can get.
When Katherine Rurka and her late husband, Steve, opened the bakery in 1993, they wanted to share their love of healthy bread and become part of the community. “People come in as customers—and once they leave they are friends,” she says.
Spring Mill uses only natural ingredients, including whole wheat flour milled right there. Baking the next day’s breads begins at 10 the night before.
This popular morning stop also sells sandwiches made with meats employees roast themselves as well as veggie creations. Loaves range from $4.95 to $6.95.
