Most Japanese restaurants serve sushi, teriyaki and tempura. “That’s kind of boring to me,” says Masaru Homma, Raku’s co-owner and chef, who has been there since 1998, about two years after the restaurant opened.
Homma has put together an innovative and reasonably priced menu of fusion cuisine that combines Asian staples with Western sauces (such as Chinese five-spiced duck breast with dry cherry-port wine sauce). Raku also offers terrific noodle soups and interesting sushi rolls (the Golden Dragon is crusted with homemade potato chips).
The restaurant does a huge repeat business; some patrons, Homma says, even eat there two or three times a week.
