“I’ve been in dogs forever,” says Janet Sidebottom, a certified trainer with Potomac Dog School who has spent more than 20 years raising, showing, grooming and boarding canines. “Ninety percent of what dogs learn is set at 4 months,” Sidebottom says, “but it’s never too late.”

Potomac has taught communication skills to a deaf dog, introduced second dogs into alpha dog households and offered potty training. Darwin’s Class, the school’s basic training for puppies, costs $250 for 16 hours.
