Updated: Northbound Drivers Urged To Avoid Stretch of Rockville Pike
Utility work causes daytime traffic issues
Updated, 5 p.m.: Utility work under way on Rockville Pike could severely affect northbound traffic headed out of Bethesda.
The work, between Jones Bridge Road and Cedar Lane, is expected to cause traffic problems from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center suggests motorists avoid the area.
According to the center’s newsletter, the northbound lanes are reduced to two and then to one.
The center’s newsletter published this week said the work to be a precursor to construction of an east-side entrance to the Medical Center Metro station and a pedestrian tunnel under the road to connect the station with Walter Reed National Military Center.
However, Ken Hartman, director of the regional services center, said Wednesday afternoon the work isn’t associated with the tunnel. Who is responsible for the work wasn’t immediately clear. Spokespeople for Pepco and the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said the utilities weren’t involved with the work either.
