Firebirds Wood Fired Grill sets opening date in Gaithersburg

The new American grill and restaurant specializes in steaks, seafood, chicken and ribs cooked over a wood-fired grill. The restaurant is scheduled to open Dec. 27 at 390 Spectrum Ave. in Gaithersburg.

Firebirds is an upscale chain restaurant with 42 locations mostly in the Midwest and along the Atlantic Coast. The restaurant was founded in 2000 by Dennis Thompson and the chain’s locations are designed to resemble Colorado lodges. This will be the company’s first Maryland restaurant.

There’s a new Ethiopian coffee shop at Traville Village Shopping Center in Rockville. Black Lion Café opened earlier this month at 9705 Traville Gateway Drive. The café roasts its own coffee beans, which are sourced from Ethiopia, inside the shop. The restaurant has seating for about 40 customers inside the space, which is decorated with wood accents and leather furniture and features a gas fireplace. Coffee and espresso drinks range from $3 to $5 and the restaurant also offers tea and a variety of baked goods.

Matchbox changing expansion plans

Matchbox Food Group, which operates the eponymous pizza restaurants including one in Rockville as well as eateries such as Ted’s Bulletin and the hot dog-focused DC-3, has changed its company leadership and scaled back plans for a major expansion after receiving millions from outside investors, according to the Washington Business Journal. The report notes that founders Ty Neal, Mark Neal and Drew Kim no longer own a controlling stake in the company and Neal, the former CEO, was replaced by Cheesecake Factory alum Peter D’Amelio, Matchbox’s former chief operating officer.

The changes come after Matchbox raised $35 million through 2015 as part of a plan to open more than 30 new restaurants by 2020. The expansion is now moving ahead more slowly than planned to give the company time to focus on quality rather than the number of new locations, D’Amelio told the business journal.

Correction: An earlier version of this story listed the Black Lion Cafe address at 8605 Traville Gateway Dr., it is in fact, as now noted, at 9705 Traville Gateway Dr.
