A new retail or restaurant space is likely coming to the Hyatt Regency hotel in downtown Bethesda.

The Meridian Group, the owner of the hotel, is set to receive Planning Board approval next week for a 1,000-square-foot retail or restaurant space on the northeast corner of the hotel’s ground floor, facing the Bethesda Metro Plaza and entrance to the Bethesda Metro station.

The new commercial space is part of the larger $30 million renovation of the hotel that started earlier this year with remodeling of its downstairs conference rooms and meeting spaces.

The 16-story, 381-room hotel has served as a landmark in the center of downtown Bethesda since the 1980s.

The new retail or restaurant space would join the Daily Grill restaurant and Morton’s The Steakhouse on the building’s ground floor.

County planners recommended approval of a site plan amendment for the new space, which calls for reconstructing part of the building and adding planters, benches and accent lighting in front.
