First Take: Community

Here’s a look at seven dishes served at the new downtown Bethesda eatery

Community on Norfolk Avenue in downtown Bethesda is a throwback of sorts, with the feel of a neighborhood coffee shop from the 1940s and ’50s. Founder Mark Bucher, who also founded BGR, The Burger Joint, and co-founded Medium Rare, wanted the restaurant to feel like the type of place where diners could hang out at the coffee counter and read the morning paper or come back with family and friends for a drink or dinner. At Community, the throwback vibe comes with a modern twist. The new spot offers a world-class cocktail program created by David Strauss of Sheppard and Le Diplomate in Washington, D.C., and the best of American comfort food such as fried chicken, burgers and even a prime rib cart.
