County Mistakenly Sends Property Registration Letters to Rockville Residents

Notices say landlords face fines if they don’t register their rental properties

Some Rockville residents incorrectly received letters from the Montgomery County Department of Housing and Community Affairs threatening fines if they didn’t register their rental properties, according to an email sent to residents from Rockville City police.

The letters said homeowners could face a fine of $500 fine per day for failing to register their rental properties with the county. However, Rockville city government regulates the rental properties of residents, not the county.

About 200 letters were mailed in three batches on Dec. 14, Friday and Tuesday, county spokeswoman Judy Stiles said. The letters go out annually to individuals who likely own rental properties.

Usually, Rockville addresses are filtered out, and the county doesn’t know how many letters were sent to addresses inside the corporate limits of Rockville, she said.

“It didn’t happen this time, and they’re working to sort that out and understand where that mistake took place,” Stiles said.

Maj. Michael W. England, field services bureau commander for the Rockville police department, said in his email that police had receive “more than half a dozen calls” about the letters.
