Bethesda Woman Dies Five Days After Chevy Chase Rear-End Collision

The 90-year-old woman was not transported to a hospital, but later sought medical treatment after experiencing head injury symptoms

Montgomery County police are investigating a Dec. 9 collision in the Chevy Chase area after a 90-year-old Bethesda woman died last week from injuries police say she suffered in the crash.

On Tuesday, police identified the woman as Amy Chaung Lee, of Whitman Drive, and said she was driving a 2002 Toyota Camry around 2:20 p.m. when her car rear-ended a 2017 Toyota RAV4 while both vehicles were heading south on Wisconsin Avenue near the intersection with Somerset Terrace.

After the collision, both cars were drivable, police said, and Lee was driven home from the scene by a relative. However, Lee was later hospitalized after she began to exhibit signs of a head injury. She died at the hospital Dec. 14, according to police.

The driver of the RAV4 was identified as Carol Smith, 51, of Gaithersburg. She was not injured in the collision, police said.

Police spokesman Rick Goodale said it's infrequent, but occasionally individuals who appear to have been involved in a minor crash suffer more serious internal injuries than they're initially aware of at the scene.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call 240-773-6620.
