Three people rescued from car in icy water

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service responders rescued three people from a car on Ten Mile Creek in Boyds on Monday night. The car was stuck in the water, among chunks of ice. The three people inside were taken from the car and put onto a boat. They were cold, but uninjured. [NBC]

Montgomery County men start social media challenge to bring sleeping bags to homeless

Two men who grew up as childhood friends in Montgomery County are starting an online campaign to bring sleeping bags to the homeless during the cold winter months. So far, they've raised money for 100 sleeping bags, but are aiming to spread attention to the effort by spreading it through social media. [ABC]

Manger points to community policing as best response to hate crimes

Montgomery County police Chief Tom Manger said officers connecting with diverse communities through community policing is essential with the rise of reported hate crimes. The year-end numbers of hate crimes have not yet been released, but Manger said incidents are more frequently escalating to violence. Reflecting on the past year, Manger said the community was moved by the murder of Olney teacher Laura Wallen and by the several gang-related murders in the area. [WTOP]

Dozens brave cold for "First Day Hikes"

Temperatures below freezing didn't stop a group of hikers from participating in an annual tradition. Dozens came to Seneca Creek State Park in Germantown for the New Year's hike. Maryland State Parks host First Day Hikes across the state, and hundreds sometimes come out for warmer starts to the year. [WTOP]

Wind chill at -3

The temperature should have a high of 24 degrees, but the wind chill is at -3, according to the National Weather Service. Winds with gusts as high as 21 mph are possible. The low falls to about 10 degrees tonight.
