The Classics Restaurant in downtown Silver Spring is closing on Feb. 27, co-owner Elliott Rattley said Monday.

Local blog Source of the Spring first reported the closing.

In the heart of downtown Silver Spring, the Colesville Road restaurant has operated directly across from the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center.

The restaurant first opened in 2006 as Ray’s the Classics, according to a Washington Post story at the time. It later dropped the “Ray’s” when original owner Michael Landrum sold the restaurant to Rattley and Nick Lopata, who had both been longtime employees there.

The restaurant specializes in steak and seafood, with options including rib eye, hanger steak and grilled Maine salmon. It also offers crab bisque, jumbo sea scallops and a diablo strip steak brushed with a spicy marinade.  It has a white-tablecloth main dining room and a smaller dining section known as The Grill, which offers a less expensive menu including The Classic Burger and offers first-come, first-seated service.

Rattley said he couldn’t make further comment as he was working the bar at The Classics on Monday evening.
