State Senate leader predicts conflict-filled session 

The president of the Maryland Senate anticipates the 2018 legislative session to be one of the most contentious lawmakers have ever experienced. Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. made the prediction as the session opened Wednesday. The state lawmakers will decide in coming months how  to respond to federal action on taxes and healthcare. [Washington Post]

Police task force arrests 205 on DUI charges over holidays 

A Montgomery County police holiday task force arrested 205 people accused of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol between Nov. 15 and Jan. 6. During that period, members of the task force gave their full time to finding impaired drivers and detecting other alcohol-related offenses, according to a news release. The figures do not include arrests made by officers on normal patrols. [Montgomery County Police Department]

Biotech to vacate Gaithersburg building 

A Gaithersburg biotech company has terminated its lease for a 150,000-square-foot building on Clopper Road. The lease for Novavax is due to expire Feb. 3. The biotech had hoped for major expansion with the anticipated success of one of its vaccines, but poor clinical trial results destroyed those plans. The company's departure from the building will open up a major piece of real estate on the I-270 corridor. [Washington Business Journal]

Lockheed Martin CEO has steered company with steady hand over past five years

In her first five years as chief executive officer of Lockheed Martin, Marillyn Hewson has refocused the Bethesda-based company on military hardware platforms. She's also maintained the company's relationships with government officials, even through the recent administration change. When she took over in 2013, Lockheed's stock was trading at between $90 and $95 per share; now, it's trading at nearly $330 per share. [Washington Business Journal]

Commission to study harassment prevention in Maryland General Assembly

The Maryland General Assembly is forming a commission to address sexual harassment in the Legislature. Legislative leaders on Wednesday announced that only women would sit on the commission, which will study how other governmental bodies deal with allegations of sexual misconduct. Presiding officers in the Maryland Senate and House of Delegates also have been working to educate lawmakers about what constitutes harassment. [Baltimore Sun]
