Bannockburn Elementary School in Bethesda and Luxmanor Elementary School in North Bethesda have been named Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools by the state.

Montgomery County Public Schools sent out a press release on Tuesday to share the news.

“These two schools are great examples of how highly engaged staffed can work in partnership with parents and community members, leading to great results for our children,” Superintendent Jack Smith said in the release.

The Maryland Department of Education chose six Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools for the 2017-2018 year. These schools will now go on to compete for the national award.

The blue ribbon program honors schools that have high performance or show significant progress in math and reading, according to the release.

Luxmanor and Bannockburn elementary schools are the 40th and 41st MCPS schools to receive the state blue ribbon designation.

“They are doing exceptional work to meet the educational needs of all of their students and these awards recognize those efforts,” school board President Michael Durso said in the press release.

The other four Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools for the year are West Towson Elementary School in Baltimore County; Urbana Elementary School in Frederick County; Fallston Middle School in Harford County; and Waterloo Elementary School in Howard County.
