A popular New York City chain is preparing to open soon in Rockville.

The Halal Guys, which serves Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food, plans to open its new restaurant in late October in the Wintergreen Plaza shopping center at 89A Rockville Pike, franchisee Rabi Ullah said.

Work crews completed a demolition of the interior of the space last week and construction is set to begin by next week, he said.

The Halal Guys will have a different layout and furnishings than the restaurant it is succeeding in that spot, Rocklands Barbeque and Grilling, which closed in April. It will match the look of other The Halal Guys locations.

It will seat about 15 to 20 people inside, with more seating available outside.

What started as a popular food cart that drew massive lines in New York City, The Halal Guys now has nearly 50 locations across the country, including one in Dupont Circle. The chain serves halal food adhering to Muslim food practices.

Gyro, falafel and chicken come with toppings of jalapenos, olives, hummus and a signature white tangy sauce. Meals are served as rice platters or in pita bread sandwiches.

Ullah plans to open a number of other locations in the state, including one in Columbia, where he is finalizing a lease. He previously told Bethesda Beat that Rockville’s Halal Guys would be an exception to the “very limited halal food options” in the area.
