The outdoor recreation retailer REI will close its Rockville location this month and move to a larger space less than a mile down the street.
The Rockville store on 1701 Rockville Pike will close on April 23 and the new Pike & Rose location at 910 Rose Avenue will open April 25, according to the company’s website.
The Pike & Rose REI will be larger than the current space and include several additional features, said store manager Heidi Poulson.
The store, which is about 38,000 square feet, will include a section for canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, which are not available at the Rockville REI, Poulson said. It will also feature a designated community space for classes and activities, as well as an expanded bike and ski repair shop.
The REI at Pike & Rose will host a grand opening from April 28 to 30, with activities, music, food and giveaways, according to the website.
REI has about 150 stores nationally and sells a variety of outdoor products, including camping gear, hiking equipment and exercise clothes. The chain has a flagship store in Washington, D.C.
REI’s opening is set to be the first in the second phase of the Pike & Rose development. Construction is underway for Canopy, an upscale hotel by Hilton. A building with 272 apartments and retailers including H&M, Sur La Table and Sephora, will open from the late summer to early fall. Workers continue to develop other projects including Pinstripes, bowling alley and restaurant, and L.L. Bean, another outdoor retailer.
