Police closed all lanes of the road Wednesday morning

Updated 1:15 p.m.: One person died and several others were injured after multiple cars crashed on Connecticut Avenue in the Wheaton area Wednesday morning, leading police to close all lanes of the busy street.

At least three cars crashed near the intersection with Littleton Street just before 8 a.m., Montgomery County Fire & Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer wrote on Twitter. Six people were taken to the hospital, including one considered a priority 1 trauma patient out of a scale of 3, with 1 being the most serious.

At 9:30 a.m., Montgomery County police wrote on Twitter that the crash was fatal. Police said one person died, but they did not have further information.

Montgomery County police initially blocked all southbound lanes and all but one northbound lane near Independence Street after the crash. Later, police closed all northbound lanes at Dean Road.

Piringer reported that southbound lanes were still closed and some northbound lanes were still blocked at 9:15 a.m. The lanes were reopened at 1 p.m., according to police.
