The owner of Kaldi’s is planning some changes for the popular independent Silver Spring coffee shop.

Kaldi’s Social House will soon have a new coffee bar on the main level and will be replacing other furniture, owner Tsega Haile said Friday. The coffee shop, located at 918 Silver Spring Ave., will also add an espresso machine to accommodate weekend crowds.

blog post by local blogger Robert Dyer suggested the popular destination would be closing after it listed several of its furniture and kitchen items on an auction website. The items, which include tables, shelves and chairs with legs that need to be fixed, are old pieces that the shop is replacing, Haile said, and the site had incorrectly advertised it as a closing sale. The auction closes Monday.

In addition to the new interior, Kaldi’s will also soon begin serving pour-over coffee and liquor drinks such as Irish Coffee, he said.

The shop, which opened in September 2013 and added a rooftop lounge in 2014, has a large local following and was packed with customers Friday. It serves a wide array of coffees, baked goods and casual foods.

Bump 'n Grind, another popular Silver Spring coffee shop, also announced a business expansion this week, with a new location in Ellsworth Place mall.
