The bridge was closed around 6:30 a.m. following the crash involving a tractor-trailer and other vehicles. The Maryland State Highway Administration reported six vehicles were involved on its website.

Traffic on the inner loop was backed up more than six miles into Virginia about 30 minutes after the collision. In Montgomery County traffic backups on the outer loop extended to Rockville Pike around 7:15 a.m.

Emergency crews began reopening lanes on the inner loop around 7:20 a.m. and all lanes were reopened by around 8 a.m. on the highway. Residual traffic delays continued for more than an hour after the lanes were reopened.
