Snow: Winter Storm Warning Cancelled, Big Snow Never Came

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BALTIMORE MD/WASHINGTON HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA AND PORTIONS OF MARYLAND AND VIRGINIA...WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM EST THIS EVENING. THE WINTER STORM WARNING HAS BEEN CANCELLED. * PRECIPITATION TYPE...SNOW. * ACCUMULATIONS...ADDITIONAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF ONE TO TWO INCHES IS POSSIBLE THROUGH THIS EVENING. * TIMING...SNOW MIXED WITH RAIN WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE LATE AFTERNOON...THEN TAPER OFF DURING EVENING. * TEMPERATURES...IN THE LOW TO MID 30S. * WINDS...NORTH 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 35 MPH. * IMPACTS...SLUSHY TO SNOW COVERED ROADS COMBINED WITH TEMPERATURES AROUND FREEZING WILL PRODUCE ICY AREAS. DRIVE WITH CAUTION. 2:16 p.m. Montgomery County will keep its 311 Call Center open until 7 p.m. today and it will reopen tomorrow at 6 a.m. Residents can reach MC311 for help finding services at 240-777-0311 or any time online. 12:44 p.m. About 130 Pepco customers are without power this afternoon in the Rock Creek Forest neighborhood on the edge of Chevy Chase and Silver Spring, according to the Pepco outage map. The outages were reported about 45 minutes ago and were caused by high winds. Estimated restoration is today at 4 p.m. 12:34 p.m. The so-called "snowquester" is not going to pack as much of a punch as projected. Shortly after noon, the National Weather Service revised its projections for the total amount of snowfall in some areas of the D.C. metro area. It is still projecting 4-8 inches of snow on the ground in Montgomery County by the time the snow ends early Thursday morning. The NWS still says roads could become covered with snow and the potential for power outages remains: ...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 AM EST THURSDAY... * PRECIPITATION TYPE...SNOW. * ACCUMULATIONS...4 TO 8 INCHES. * TIMING...SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND EVENING...THEN TAPER OFF AFTER MIDNIGHT. SNOW WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES DURING THE LATE MORNING AND AFTERNOON. * TEMPERATURES...IN THE LOWER 30S. * WINDS...NORTH 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 40 MPH. * IMPACTS...HEAVY WET SNOW AND GUSTY WINDS WILL LEAD TO POWER OUTAGES. SNOW COVERED ROADS AND POOR VISIBILITIES IN HEAVY SNOW WILL MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT. 10:21 a.m. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services says its crews have been preparing for today's snow since Monday and are storm ready. Extra staffing is on hand to meet expected demand and a team is monitoring the storm. MCFRS also provided some tips for residents. 9:40 a.m. In a 9:30 a.m. update, Montgomery County's Public Information Office advises that the National Weather Service forecasts the snow will intensify later this afternoon and that Ride On buses are currently operating on their normal schedules despite wet and slushy roads. Parking at all county parking meters and garages will be free today and there will be no trash or recycling collection. Pick-ups will slide one day later for the rest of the week. All Montgomery Parks facilities are closed and all classes and programs are canceled. 8:58 a.m. As heavy snow starts to fall and since you likely don't have to work, Bethesda Row's Mussel Bar (7262 Woodmont Ave.) is offering the following snow day specials: Snow on the way...Happy Hour ALL DAY!! $1 Oysters, $2 Retro Cans, $5.50 Rail Drinks & Select Drafts, $7 Wines, ALL DAY LONG 7:42 a.m. State Highway Administration officials are warning drivers not to be misled by the bare pavement they'll likely see this morning. "Conditions will change rapidly and we're urging drivers to stay off the roads and leave the driving to our crews," said SHA administrator Melinda Peters. The SHA has more than 2,700 state and contract personnel and 2,400 pieces of equipment available statewide and it is at more than 90 percent capacity when it comes to salt reserves. 6:17 a.m. Imagination Stage (4908 Auburn Ave.) is closed today due to weather. Call 301-718-9521 for more info. 5:38 a.m. Metro's J1 bus service, the Bethesda-Silver Spring line, is suspended today due to weather conditions. 5:19 a.m. The Greater Bethesda area's first storm-related power outages were reported around 2:40 a.m. in Glen Echo near Massachusetts Avenue and Mohican Road. About 40 customers there are without power. Estimated restoration is by 6 a.m. today, according to Pepco's outage map. 4:58 a.m. Schools, all MCPS administrative officers and county government (with the exception of essential workers) are all closed today due to the snowstorm. All school and community activities in school buildings are canceled. All federal offices in the D.C. area are closed, emergency and telework-ready employees required to work must follow their agency's policies.
